Easy side hustles for full time workers on five hours a week

Easy side hustles for full time workers: delivery, paid studies, reselling, local tasks and tutoring, with real fees, tax rules and a weekend plan.

The short answer

If you already work full time, the easiest side hustles are the ones you can switch on and off without a boss or client waiting on you: app-based delivery, paid research studies, selling things you already own, and small local tasks or tutoring once you have a routine. None of them will replace a salary. The median side hustler earns around $200 a month, so plan for useful extra money rather than a second income.

Time cost: about five hours per weekend, usually one Saturday morning plus a short Sunday block, with no weeknights needed unless you want them.

What “easy” should mean when you already work 40 hours

Most lists call a side hustle “easy” when it doesn’t need a degree. With a day job, four other questions matter more. Can you start within a week or two? Does it cost little or nothing to begin? Can you pause for a month when work gets heavy or the kids are ill, without letting anyone down? And does it stay inside the weekend instead of spilling into Tuesday night?

That last test rules out a lot. Client freelancing sounds flexible, but clients email on weekdays and expect replies. The options below pass all four tests, or come close, which is why we’d start with them. The trade-off is that the easiest work is rarely the best paid.

You would be in large company. In September 2026 the Bureau of Labor Statistics counted 9.0 million people holding more than one job, about 5.5% of everyone employed. Roughly 5.2 million of them combined a full-time main job with a part-time second one.

Delivery and errand apps

Delivery is the closest thing to a true on-off switch. With DoorDash you get base pay of $2 to $10 or more per offer plus 100% of tips, and you can choose between “Earn per Offer” and “Earn by Time.” Weekly direct deposit is free and usually lands in two to three days. Fast Pay costs $1.99 per daily transfer, which adds up if you use it every time. You need a Social Security number and a background check that includes your motor vehicle record. Any car works, with no model-year rule. We weigh the pay against the time in more detail in DoorDash on weekends: is it worth it next to a day job?

Age rules catch some younger full-timers out. DoorDash requires you to be 18 in most states, 19 in states including Arizona, Florida, Georgia, New Jersey and Texas, and 21 for new applicants in California. Uber Eats takes 18-year-olds by bike or on foot and 19-year-olds by scooter or car, but you must be 21 to deliver by car or other motor vehicle in California and New York State. Instacart full-service shoppers must be 18 or older, able to lift 40 pounds and have a reliable car. They can cash out in as little as two hours once they’ve completed five batches. Amazon Flex requires you to be 21 and lets you book blocks up to a week ahead, which suits people who like a planned Saturday. Amazon says most drivers earn $18 to $25 an hour but stresses that actual earnings vary, and that figure comes before fuel and wear on your car.

DoorDash says its insurance only covers you while you’re actively dashing. Before your first shift, call your own auto insurer and ask how they treat delivery driving.

These are the easiest of all to start and the lowest earning. Prolific requires studies to pay at least $8 an hour. You can cash out to PayPal once your approved balance reaches $6, though new accounts wait 72 hours between cash-outs until they’ve made four withdrawals. Survey Junkie is open to adults in the US, has a $5 minimum cash-out by PayPal, bank transfer or gift card, and asks you to verify your identity before you redeem.

If you spent five full hours on studies at the $8 minimum, you’d make $40 before tax. That assumes studies are waiting when you sit down, and often they won’t be. Treat this as something for a quiet hour on the sofa. If you want steadier work from home, see the best part-time jobs from home for evenings and weekends.

Selling what you already own

A garage or closet clear-out is a gentle place to start because the stock costs you nothing. Mercari charges sellers 10% of the item price plus buyer-paid shipping, with no separate processing fee. Direct deposit is free, and Instant Pay costs $3 per cash-out. eBay gives you 250 free listings a month and takes a 13.6% final value fee in most categories, plus $0.30 or $0.40 per order. The natural limit is that you run out of things to sell. Buying stock to flip is a different hustle that takes far more time.

Small local jobs and tutoring

TaskRabbit lets you pick tasks close to home on the days you choose. You need to be 18 or older with an SSN, a checking account (prepaid and savings accounts don’t count) and a credit card. There’s also a $25 non-refundable registration fee, and paying it doesn’t guarantee approval. You also need to live in one of its active US cities. For more weekend work close to home, see the best local side hustles when you only have weekends.

If you know a school subject well, Wyzant tutors keep 75% of their rate and the platform keeps 25%. For students you refer yourself, you keep 100%. Expect quieter summers, since demand tends to follow the school year. We compare platforms in the best online tutoring jobs for evenings and weekends.

What you can realistically expect to earn

Bankrate’s 2025 survey found that 27% of US adults have a side hustle. The median side hustler earned $200 a month, and the average was $885. A few big earners pull the average up, so the median is the safer figure to plan around. Suppose, as an assumption, that $200 took you five hours each weekend, or about 20 hours a month. That works out to about $10 an hour before costs and tax. It’s useful money for a holiday fund or a car repair, so decide early what it’s for.

Before you start: your day job

Read your employee handbook or contract for anything on outside work, moonlighting or conflicts of interest. Keep the side hustle completely apart from your job. Don’t use your work laptop or phone, don’t do it on company time, and don’t sell to your employer’s customers. If a policy asks you to disclose outside work, disclose it before you start.

The FTC’s nationwide ban on non-competes was struck down in 2024, and in September 2025 the FTC dropped its appeal. That leaves existing non-compete agreements to state law. California protects lawful off-duty conduct, including second jobs. Employers there can still enforce genuine conflict-of-interest rules and act on poor performance or attendance at the main job. This is general information, not legal advice. If your contract worries you, a short consultation with an employment lawyer in your state is money well spent.

Taxes when you already have a W-2

This is a plain-English overview, not tax advice. A tax professional can check your own situation. The IRS says side income is taxable even if it’s part-time and even if no form arrives, and fewer forms will arrive now. The 1099-NEC threshold rose to $2,000 for payments made after 2025, and payment apps only have to issue a 1099-K once you pass both $20,000 and 200 transactions in a year. Neither change makes the income tax-free.

Once your net self-employment earnings reach $400, you also owe self-employment tax of 15.3%: 12.4% for Social Security and 2.9% for Medicare. You can deduct half of it when working out your adjusted gross income. The Social Security part only applies up to the 2026 wage base of $184,500, and your day-job wages count toward that cap. So if your salary is already close to it, less of your side income faces the 12.4%.

Quarterly estimated payments usually apply if you expect to owe $1,000 or more. The IRS lets employees skip them by filing a new Form W-4 to have more tax withheld from their paycheck. For most people with a day job, that’s the simplest route.

Drivers get two useful extras. The standard mileage rate is 76 cents a mile for July through December 2026, up from 72.5 cents in the first half of the year, so log your miles with dates. Rideshare driving and goods delivery, including app-based delivery, are also on the IRS list of tipped occupations. That means qualified tips may be deductible, up to $25,000 a year from 2025 to 2028. The deduction phases out above $150,000 of modified adjusted gross income ($300,000 for joint filers). It can’t exceed your net income from the work, and the tips must appear on a W-2, 1099-NEC, 1099-MISC or 1099-K, or be reported on Form 4137.

The “easy money” offers to ignore

Searching for easy side hustles puts you in front of scammers. Reported job-scam losses rose from $90 million in 2020 to $501 million in 2024. The FTC has flagged a fast-growing pattern called task scams. They start with an unsolicited text or WhatsApp message and pay out small amounts to build trust. Then they ask you to deposit your own money, often in crypto. Other red flags include work-from-home kits you have to buy, reshipping jobs, checks that overpay you and ask for the difference back, mystery-shopper fees, and placement firms that charge you. The FTC’s rule of thumb is that a job promising a lot of money quickly for little work is almost certainly a scam. A realistic weekend schedule

Here is one way to fit five hours around a family weekend:

  • Saturday 10am to 1pm: your main hustle, either a delivery block or one or two local tasks or tutoring sessions.
  • Saturday afternoon and evening: off. Family, errands, rest.
  • Sunday 9am to 10am: photograph and list a few items, or reply to buyers.
  • Sunday afternoon: off.
  • Sunday evening, 30 minutes: a study or two, if any are available.
  • Sunday evening, 30 minutes: log your earnings and miles, then set aside a share for tax.

Will this wear you out?

Five hours sounds small, but it comes on top of a full week. Driving after a week of commuting is tiring in its own way, and even sitting through studies takes focus at the end of a long week. The warning signs are quiet: dreading Saturday morning, getting short with your family, or your day job starting to slip. Take one weekend off a month, and plan to pause around the December holidays and family summer trips instead of squeezing shifts in. A pace you can keep for a year will earn you more than a big first month that leaves you exhausted.

Scaling it gently

You can raise your income without adding many hours. Raise your tutoring rate once you have good reviews, and find students yourself so Wyzant takes nothing. Keep repeat TaskRabbit clients, and on delivery apps keep track of which of your time slots actually pay. If you do add hours, add a Sunday morning block before you touch a weeknight. Ten hours across two weekend mornings still leaves both afternoons free.

If you only have one weekend

On Saturday morning, sign up for Prolific and Survey Junkie and try a few studies so you can see the real hourly pay for yourself. Start a DoorDash or Uber Eats application too, knowing the background check has to clear before your first shift. On Saturday afternoon, photograph five things you no longer use and list them on Mercari or eBay. On Sunday, read your employee handbook’s section on outside work, call your car insurer if you plan to drive, and set up a simple spreadsheet with columns for date, hours, earnings, miles and fees. Before Monday, pick one option and give it a fair four-week trial. At the end of the month, check honestly with yourself and your household whether it’s worth keeping.
