Evening or night jobs that fit around a full-time job
Evening and night jobs that fit around a 9-to-5: real BLS pay, delivery app rules, night pay facts, scam warnings and 2026 tax points for side income.
The short answer
If you already work a day job, the evening or night jobs that hold up best are shift work that starts once offices empty (office cleaning, bartending, security, stocking) and delivery apps you switch on when it suits you. If you want to stay home, evening customer service has the clearest pay data, and it’s also where most of the fake job offers turn up. Night hours don’t come with extra pay by law, so ask about a shift differential before you count on one.
Time cost: Plan on 8 to 12 hours across Friday and Saturday evenings for most shift jobs. Delivery apps let you skip weeknights completely, while a shift employer may ask for a weeknight too, so check before you accept.
Who actually works after dark
Evening work is more ordinary than it sounds. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ 2024 to 2025 figures, 15% of US wage and salary workers usually work outside daytime hours. That includes 5% on evenings and 3% on nights. Part-time workers are almost twice as likely as full-timers to work these hours (23% against 13%), so part-time evening roles are a normal part of the market, not an oddity.
The same release shows where the hours are concentrated. Non-daytime work makes up 40% of jobs in leisure and hospitality, 25% in transportation and utilities, and 20% in wholesale and retail trade. Plenty of people choose these hours, too. About a quarter cite personal preference, and 13% say evenings work better for their family. If your partner is home with the kids from six o’clock, an evening shift can be easier to arrange than a Saturday daytime one.
Night pay is something you negotiate
Plenty of articles say night shifts pay more. Sometimes they do, but nothing makes them. The US Department of Labor states that federal law doesn’t require extra pay for night work, and that any premium “is a matter of agreement” between you and your employer. The only federal premium is time and a half for covered nonexempt workers after 40 hours in a workweek.
Federal government employees show what a formal differential can look like. General Schedule staff get 10% extra on basic pay for regularly scheduled work between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. Private employers make their own rules, so ask at interview whether there’s an evening or overnight differential and what time it starts.
Your floor is the minimum wage where you live. The federal rate is still $7.25 an hour, but 30 states list a higher basic rate. Washington is at $17.13, California $16.90, and DC $18.40. Check your own state’s rate before you judge whether an offer is fair.
Evening jobs outside the home
These are national BLS medians for May 2025, so a part-time evening rate in your area could come in above or below them.
| Job | Median pay | What to know for evenings |
|---|---|---|
| Janitors and building cleaners | $17.71/hr | Many work evenings, because offices get cleaned once they’re empty |
| Bartenders | $16.51/hr (includes tips) | Late evenings, weekends and holidays; most states require alcohol servers to be 18+ |
| Security guards | $38,020/yr | Night shifts are common; most states require a license or registration |
| Stockers and order fillers | $37,330/yr | Schedules may include nights and weekends |
| Customer service representatives | $21.53/hr | Evenings and weekends common; some roles are remote |
| Nursing assistants | $42,260/yr | Nights, weekends and holidays possible; usually needs state-approved training and an exam |
Office cleaning is a calm option. The building is quiet, you can often listen to something while you work, and you aren’t dealing with customers after a day of meetings. Bartending pays a large share in tips and has a social energy that some people find restoring and others find draining. Security usually means a background check and training before your first shift, so don’t expect to start the week you apply. Nursing assistant work is meaningful, but the training and competency exam are a real upfront commitment for a side income. Stocking and warehouse work is widely advertised, and bartending reliably includes holiday shifts. Amazon has raised minimum starting pay to $20 an hour, but that figure covers eligible full-time operations employees, so ask what part-time or seasonal roles pay before you assume it applies.
App-based gigs you can switch on after dinner
Delivery apps offer something shift jobs can’t: you pick the hours, and you can stop when your energy runs out. The trade-off is that pay depends on demand, and your car costs come out of your own pocket.
DoorDash accepts Dashers from 18 in most places, from 19 in states including Texas, Florida and Georgia, and from 21 for new applicants in California. You’ll need a smartphone, and for car delivery a valid license and personal auto insurance. Base pay per offer ranges from $2 to more than $10, and you keep all of your tips. An “Earn by Time” mode guarantees a minimum rate for active time. Weekly direct deposit is the default, daily Fast Pay costs $1.99 per transfer, and instant pay is free with the DoorDash Crimson account. We look at the weekend economics in more detail in DoorDash on weekends: is it worth it next to a day job?
Uber Eats accepts bike and on-foot couriers from 18 and car couriers from 19, or 21 in California and New York State. Tips are yours in full, and Instant Pay lets you cash out up to six times a day for a fee. Driving people for Uber requires at least a year of US driving experience (three if you’re under 25), an eligible four-door car and a screening of your driving and criminal record. Amazon Flex requires you to be 21 or older, with a four-door sedan, SUV, van or covered-bed truck. Amazon says most Flex drivers earn $18 to $25 an hour, varying with location, tips and timing, and that figure is before fuel and wear on your car.
Night jobs from home, and the scams that copy them
The best-documented work-at-home night job is customer service. The BLS notes that some call centers run 24 hours and some representatives work from home, with a median of $21.53 an hour. Ask early whether a remote role can be evenings only, because the hours vary by employer.
You’ll also see lists suggesting proofreading, transcription, bookkeeping, virtual assistant work and online tutoring. These are real kinds of work, but most of the pay ranges quoted online have no source, so judge each offer on its own terms. Our guides to part-time jobs from home for evenings and weekends and online tutoring jobs for evenings and weekends go further. If your day job gives you a skill like bookkeeping, it can pay in the evenings, but read the day job section below first.
At-home night work is also where scammers concentrate. The FTC’s job scam guidance lists clear warning signs: you’re asked to pay to get the job, you’re sent a check to deposit and told to send part of it on, you’re asked to reship packages, or you’re promised big money for very little work. An honest employer will never ask you to pay. Reports of job scams tripled between 2020 and 2024, with reported losses rising from $90 million to $501 million. In 2025, one in three people who lost money to a job or business opportunity scam said it started on social media. Treat offers that arrive by text or direct message with extra suspicion, and report them at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
Before you start: your day job
Read your employee handbook and contract for an outside employment or moonlighting clause, and for conflict-of-interest rules. A Saturday bar shift rarely causes trouble. Freelancing in your own field for clients your employer might serve is a different matter. Keep the side work off your work laptop and phone, and never do it on company time.
The FTC’s 2024 rule banning noncompetes is no longer in force: a federal court blocked enforcement in August 2024, and the FTC moved to dismiss its own appeal in September 2025. Whether a noncompete holds up now depends mostly on your state’s law, and the FTC still challenges individual agreements it considers unfair. If your contract has one and the evening work sits anywhere near your field, an employment lawyer can tell you where you stand. This is general information, not legal advice.
Taxes on evening income
If your evening job is a regular W-2 job, tax is withheld, but two jobs can still leave you underpaid at year end. The IRS lists new paid work as a reason to recheck your withholding, and its Tax Withholding Estimator can produce a pre-filled Form W-4. If you earn cash tips, you must report them to your employer once they reach $20 in a month, by the 10th of the following month.
App work is self-employment. The IRS guidance for gig workers says to report all income even if no 1099 arrives. That matters more now, because the 1099-NEC threshold rose to $2,000 for 2026 payments and payment apps only file a 1099-K above $20,000 and 200 transactions. Self-employment tax is 15.3% once your net earnings reach $400, and you may need to pay quarterly estimates (due 15 April, 15 June, 15 September and 15 January). Log your miles: the 2026 business rate is 72.5¢ a mile for January to June and 76¢ for July to December.
Tipped evening work gets a break. For tax years 2025 to 2028 you can deduct up to $25,000 of qualifying tips, phasing out above $150,000 of modified adjusted gross income ($300,000 for joint filers). You need an SSN valid for employment, and married couples must file jointly. The IRS list of qualifying occupations includes bartenders, wait staff, taxi and rideshare drivers and app-based delivery workers. If you’re self-employed, the deduction can’t exceed your net income from that work. A separate overtime deduction covers only the federally required “half” of time and a half. None of this is professional tax advice, and a tax preparer can check how it applies to you.
Will this wear you out?
Evening work fits around a day job more easily than overnight work, and we’d steer most readers towards shifts that end by about 10 or 11 p.m. The health research on night work deserves respect. The World Health Organization’s cancer agency classifies night shift work as “probably carcinogenic to humans,” though that rating reflects how strong the evidence is rather than how big the risk is, and the human evidence is limited. NIOSH links shift work and long hours to short, disturbed sleep, higher risk of heart and digestive problems, and fatigue-related errors and crashes, which is worth weighing if your side job means driving late.
Some places limit late-then-early shifts at the same employer. Oregon gives workers at large retail, hospitality and food service employers 10 hours’ rest between shifts, with time and a half for work inside that window unless the worker asked for it. New York City requires fast food workers’ written consent and a $100 premium for a “clopening” with less than 11 hours between shifts. No law protects the gap between your Friday bar shift and your Monday meeting, so you’ll have to guard it yourself.
A realistic weekend schedule
One sustainable pattern, assuming a Friday and Saturday evening job:
- Friday: finish the day job, eat early with the family, work 6 to 10 p.m., and be in bed by 11:30.
- Saturday morning and afternoon: sleep in, then unhurried family time, errands and a proper rest before work.
- Saturday evening: a 5 to 10 p.m. shift or a dinner-time delivery block.
- Sunday: entirely off, which is what keeps the arrangement going for months rather than weeks.
Scaling it gently
Once one evening shift feels routine, the gentle way to double your income is to add a short weeknight shift rather than a second weekend night. A Tuesday shift that ends by nine costs less family time than giving up Sunday. Seasons help too: bartending and other hospitality work get busier around the holidays, so a few extra December shifts can do the job of a year-round increase. Keep the rest of your year light enough to recover. If you’d like more options with movable hours, see how to find a side hustle with flexible hours around a day job.
If you only have one weekend
On Saturday morning, read your handbook’s outside-work rules and look up your state’s minimum wage. Then apply for two local evening roles, such as a commercial cleaning company and a busy bar or restaurant, and start one delivery app signup. Background checks can take a while, so you may not be working by Sunday. On Saturday evening, talk with your partner about which night you could realistically give each week.
On Sunday, do the sums: likely hourly pay, minus fuel if you’ll be driving, minus a set-aside for tax if it’s gig income (we use a rough quarter as a working assumption, not a rule). If an app has already approved you, try one two-hour dinner block and notice how you feel on Monday morning. Give that feeling as much weight as the money.
