Weekend side hustles that fit around a full-time job

Weekend side hustles that suit a 9-to-5: delivery, pet care, tutoring, reselling and rentals, with 2026 fees, tax rules and a test plan for one weekend.

The short answer

The weekend side hustles that suit a full-time job are the ones people need while they’re off work too: delivery at mealtimes, pet sitting and babysitting, tutoring, reselling from home, and renting out a car or a room. None of them replaces a salary, and each comes with fees, tax rules and insurance questions. Pick one, give it a month, and keep at least half a day completely free.

Time cost: 4 to 8 hours across Saturday and Sunday for most of these, plus about an hour of weeknight admin (messages, listings, prep) for reselling, tutoring and pet care.

Why weekends are their own kind of market

Most workers have weekends off, and that is what makes them useful. In the Bureau of Labor Statistics time-use survey, 81% of employed people worked on an average weekday in 2025, compared with 30% on an average weekend day. On a Saturday, far more people are free to travel, go out for the evening, order dinner or book a lesson for their child, and those are the needs a weekend hustle can meet.

You would be in good company. BLS counted 9.0 million people with more than one job in September 2026, about 5.5% of everyone employed, and roughly 5.2 million of them had a full-time main job plus a part-time second one. The best choice for you is the hustle that fits the hours you can give without taking them from sleep or family, even if another one pays more on paper.

Weekend side hustle ideas that suit a 9-to-5

Delivery shifts around mealtimes

Delivery is the easiest hustle to switch on and off. DoorDash pays base pay of $2 to $10 or more per offer, plus promotions such as Peak Pay, and you keep all your tips. Pay arrives weekly by direct deposit, and the Fast Pay option costs $1.99 per transfer. DoorDash’s own advice is that lunch and dinner are the busiest times. It doesn’t claim weekends pay more, so we wouldn’t count on that. Plan your shifts around mealtimes rather than giving up the whole day. Our guide to DoorDash on weekends next to a day job goes into this in more detail.

Check the age rules before you sign up. Uber Eats lets you deliver by bike or on foot at 18 and by car at 19, but car delivery is 21 in California and New York State. DoorDash says its minimum age may be higher than 18 in some states. Rideshare is stricter: Lyft sets 21 to 25 depending on region, and Uber requires three years of driving experience if you’re under 25.

Insurance needs a phone call before your first shift. Personal auto policies generally exclude driving for pay, some insurers treat it as grounds for cancellation, and the app’s coverage while you wait for an order may only meet the legal minimum. Local pay rules differ too. New York City set a minimum of $22.13 an hour before tips for app delivery workers from April 2026, so check whether your city has a pay floor of its own.

Reselling from home

Reselling has no fixed schedule. You can photograph and list on Saturday morning, then drop parcels off on your way to work on Monday. eBay gives you 250 free listings a month. Its main charge is a final value fee of 13.6% of the total sale (item, shipping and tax together), plus $0.40 on orders over $10. On a $50 order total, that comes to $6.80 plus $0.40, so you keep about $42.80 before shipping costs. The eBay fee page lists the exceptions, including a lower rate on athletic sneakers of $150 or more.

Your own closet is a gentle place to start. The IRS says selling personal items at a loss isn’t taxable, though a gain is. If you plan to sell perfume or nail polish on Poshmark, read its October 2026 notice about a $50 USPS hazmat fee first.

Pet care and babysitting

Weekends are when dog owners travel and parents want a night out, so this work fits naturally into Saturday and Sunday. For a benchmark, BLS median pay in May 2025 was $17.08 an hour for animal care and service workers and $16.82 for childcare workers. Use those as a reference point when you set your own rate. Requests tend to cluster around holidays and summer travel, so decide early how many of those weekends you’re willing to give. Tutoring online

Tutoring works well from home on a Sunday. On Wyzant you keep 75% of your posted rate (100% for students you refer), and a separate 9% service fee applies to lessons. Demand follows the school calendar, so expect busier exam seasons and a quieter summer. Our list of online tutoring jobs for evenings and weekends compares other options.

Renting out your car or space

Renting earns money while you stay home, but weekend-only availability affects what you’re paid. In nine cities, including Austin, Phoenix and Seattle, Turo’s host share depends on how far ahead the trip is booked. It ranges from 65 to 85% for trips booked 0 to 2 days ahead, rising to 80 to 100% for trips booked 28 or more days ahead. A plan with a higher share also leaves you responsible for more damage. Airbnb is moving home hosts to a single host-only fee, which is 15.5% for most hosts. Check your city’s short-term rental rules before you list a room.

Two other ideas show up on most lists. Plasma donation is federally limited to twice in seven days, at least two days apart, so you can’t donate on both Saturday and Sunday. For event photography, BLS reports a median of $21.47 an hour, and about 67% of photographers are self-employed.

Finding work close to home

Search results for weekend work near you are mostly apps. For pet care, babysitting and tutoring, local word of mouth often does better: neighbors, other parents at school, your building’s message board. Forum threads, including on Reddit, are good for spotting problems with a platform, but any pay figure there is one person’s experience in one city. Fees and tax rules change more often than the ideas do, so check the date on anything you read. For more options that fit Saturdays, see the best local side hustles when you only have weekends.

Before you start: your day job

Read your employment contract and handbook for anything about outside work, conflicts of interest or who owns what you create. Keep your hustle off your work laptop and out of work hours. In California, Labor Code ยง2870 generally stops an employer from claiming inventions you develop entirely on your own time and equipment, with exceptions for work related to the employer’s business. Federal employees can’t take on outside work that conflicts with their official duties. This is general information rather than legal advice. If something in your contract worries you, ask HR or an employment lawyer.

Taxes on weekend income in 2026

The IRS says gig income is taxable even if you never receive a 1099, and that includes cash. Self-employment tax of 15.3% applies once your net self-employment earnings reach $400. The reporting thresholds have gone up: Form 1099-K is back to more than $20,000 and more than 200 transactions, and Form 1099-NEC rises to $2,000 for payments made in 2026. Neither change affects what you owe.

The simplest fix for someone with a 9-to-5 is to ask your employer to withhold more tax by filing a new W-4, which can save you from quarterly estimated payments. Those are generally required if you expect to owe $1,000 or more. If you drive, the business mileage rate is 72.5 cents a mile for January to June 2026 and 76 cents from July to December, so log your miles as you go. The IRS also allows a deduction for qualified tips (up to $25,000) that self-employed gig workers can claim, capped at your net income from that work. Check that it applies to the year you’re filing. None of this is tax advice, and a tax preparer can confirm your situation.

Scams aimed at people looking for weekend work

The FTC recorded $15.9 billion in fraud losses in 2025. Its job-scam guidance gives clear rules. A real employer never asks you to pay to get a job, reshipping goods is never a real job, and you shouldn’t trust a “cleared” check from an employer who wants money sent back. If anyone asks you to deposit a check and then send money on, it’s a scam, and that includes mystery-shopper offers. Be just as wary of “tasks” that pay you to like or rate things and then ask for a crypto deposit. Report anything suspicious at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

A realistic weekend schedule

On Saturday, have a slow breakfast, then spend 9 to 11 on a pet visit or on photographing and listing items. If you drive, do a delivery block from about 11:30 to 1:30. The afternoon and evening belong to family and friends.

On Sunday, keep the morning off until 10, fit in a tutoring session or two before noon, and rest in the afternoon. In the evening, spend 20 minutes logging earnings and miles and setting tax money aside. That comes to roughly five or six working hours, and you still get a weekend.

Will this wear you out?

It can, and it usually happens slowly. Watch Monday morning: if you start the week already tired, the hustle is costing more than it pays. Work you can switch on and off, like delivery and reselling, is easier to keep up than work where someone depends on you every Saturday. Take one weekend off a month, and plan around school holidays, when your family needs you most. There’s more on pacing in how to make side hustles work around a full-time job.

Scaling it gently

Earning more doesn’t have to mean working more hours. Raise your rates for repeat clients, batch your listing photos into one session, and choose higher-value items to resell. If you ever need more time, add a few hours to Sunday before you give up any weeknights.

If you only have one weekend

On Saturday morning, pick one idea from this list and spend an hour on sign-up or setup. Read the platform’s fee page, and call your insurer if driving is involved. On Saturday afternoon, list five things you no longer use, or tell three neighbors you’re available for pet sitting or tutoring. On Sunday, do one small paid session if you can, then write down your hours, earnings and how tired you felt. Look at those notes again on Wednesday. If the numbers look reasonable and your week didn’t suffer, try it again next weekend.
